The AAM’s Etel Adnan exhibition, Another Weather, is a show in two parts. The first is a solo presentation of new paintings by the Lebanese poet and artist; the second, a collection of works by a younger generation of artists that examine the continued contemporary engagement with landscape.

Born in 1925 in Beirut, Adnan studied at the Sorbonne in Paris before moving to teach philosophy at the University of California, where she began her painting practice. In the seventies, she moved just north of San Francisco and became so fascinated by a nearby mountain, Mount Tamalpais, that it became her central subject matter, appearing throughout her paintings, weavings, and poetry. Currently living and working between Beirut and Paris, Adnan continues to paint the mountain—now from memory rather than observation. It operates as both a specific landmark within her own life as well as a broader reflection on the enduring persistence of nature.

Like two chapters read together, the collected works within Another Weather reveal how our expanded landscape becomes the means through which we can confront the weight of the world, understanding our role and place within its larger construct.
