Beyond Timbuktu: Preserving the Manuscripts of Djenné, Mali

28 September 2018–6 January 2019

Exhibition Overview

Archivist Garba Yaro with the Djenné Library Manuscripts

Timbuktu hit the headlines in 2013 when local people rallied together to save their manuscripts from militants who were occupying the city. Djenné was spared the occupation, but its documentary heritage remains vulnerable.

This display reveals this centre of Islamic learning, located on the banks of the Niger Delta. Contemporary photographs of the city are interspersed with examples of both religious and secular texts. These manuscripts have been digitised since 2009 through the Endangered Archives Programme.
