About the Museum
This foundation was created in 1984 by artist Antoni Tàpies to promote the study and knowledge of Modern and contemporary art. The Fundació takes a pluralistic, interdisciplinary approach: it sets up cooperative ventures with experts in different fields in order to contribute to a better understanding of contemporary art and culture. The Fundació owns one of the world’s most complete collections of Tàpies’ work, which mainly consists of donations by Antoni and Teresa Tàpies. It augments periodic presentations of the artist’s work with temporary exhibitions, symposia, lectures, films and a range of publications. The museum opened its doors in June 1990 in the building of the former Editorial Montaner i Simon publishing house, designed by Modernist architect Lluís Domènech i Montaner.
