100% Make - Up

Mar 10 - Aug 29, 2018

Exhibition Overview

Picture of vases from Allessandro Mendini

The Italian Allessandro Mendini (1931) is one of the most important Italian designers of the past decades. In 1992, in collaboration with the Italian company Alessi, he designed a prototype vase of white porcelain. The vases were then decorated by artists from all over the world. The result - 100% make-up - is very special. From 10 March to 19 August you can admire them all.

Decorations have been made by famous names such as the American architect Robert Venturi, the French designer Philippe Starck, the Japanese fashion designer Yoshiki Hishinuma and visual artist Peter Struycken from the Netherlands. Thanks to the cultural diversity of the hundred designers, Mendini's white prototype has received a hundred different meanings.

The prototype vase that Mendini designed for this project is 38.5 centimeters high with a lid. 100 copies of each vase have been made, so that a total of 10,000 numbered copies have been produced. The Friends of the Gemeentemuseum made the purchase of the vases and the prototype possible in 2005.
