About the Museum

The Groeningemuseum offers an unique overview of the historical evolution of painting in Flanders. The focal point of the collection is without a doubt the internationally renowned collection of Early Netherlandish Painting, with masterpieces by Jan van Eyck, Hans Memling, Hugo van der Goes, and Gerard David. Although the paintings of the Northern Renaissance are a high point, the collection also includes masterpieces of Neoclassicism, the Flemish Expressionism and post-war art from Flanders. One of the icons of the museum is Jan van Eyck's portrait of his wife Margaretha. It is not only one of the earliest female portraits in European Art History, but also one of the few tangible documents of van Eyck’s private life.
