About the Museum

Bruges’s renowned Groeningmuseum opened in 1930 on the site of a former abbey and houses the city’s extensive collection of Belgian and Flemish art, spanning six centuries. Masterpieces by Flemish primitives including Jan van Eyck and Hans Memling are undoubted highlights, though the collection reaches right up to the postwar era and takes in baroque works, neoclassical and realist works by 18th and 19th century masters, as well as examples of Belgian expressionism, symbolism and modernism. Temporary exhibitions complement the collection.
