Exhibition Overview

J.Th. Lundbye was a great favourite with the founder of The Hirschsprung Collection, Heinrich Hirschsprung, and as a result the museum is now home to more than 600 drawings by the artist. Lundbye, who was one of the great artists of the Danish Golden Age, was born 200 years ago on 1 September 2018.

We celebrate J.Th. Lundbye with a small, but rich exhibition that unfolds Lundbye’s drawings from floor to ceiling. Reality, imagination and memories interweave in Lundbye’s drawings, and close-up studies of leaves of grass and toads meet drawings of expansive views, ancient tombs, portraits of the artist’s great love and close friends, combining to transform this Corner Display into a kind of graphic novel.
