David Hockney, Mr and Mrs Clark and Percy, 1970-71. Acrylic on canvas, 84 x 120in.
One of the nation’s best-loved paintings, Mr and Mrs Clark and Percy (1970-1) by David Hockney (b.1937) is also one of the greatest portraits of British art. On loan to Bath from Tate, this painting of monumental size (more than 2 x 3 metres) of Hockney’s friends the dress designer Ossie Clark and the fabric designer Celia Birtwell (and their cat) speaks powerfully to the 18th-century conversation pieces in the Holburne‘s own collection as well as to the portraits of singers, dancers and actors in Gainsborough & the Theatre.
