Isa Genzken, Basic Research, 1989.
This exhibition is a solo show featuring as yet little known works by Isa Genzken (*1948, Bad Oldesloe). The artist, whose interest in aesthetic simultaneities has strongly influenced a younger generation, has dealt from an early point in time with the surfaces of the world and the way they become images, for example, built architectures to which she sensitively lends expression in photographs and sculptures. The Kunsthalle Bern brings together sculptures, photographs, films, and paintings from the end of the 1970s to the early 1990s, for instance, a selection of her Basic Research Paintings created between 1988 and 1991. These are pictures whose fascinating, dark-green to brown surfaces bring abstract painting to mind and at the same time resemble aerial landscape photos.
