About the Museum

Prized works by canonical masters of western civilisation are woven throughout this intimate collection. The monumental Neo-Classical edifice itself – a sophisticated example of 1920s elegance that was renovated to renewed splendour in 1995 – has a commanding presence on a spectacular site, with unsurpassed vistas of the Golden Gate Bridge, the city and the Pacific Ocean beyond. This museum brings to mind a time when the fine arts epitomised civilisation’s highest values: Auguste Rodin’s The Thinker is here, as well as works by El Greco, Peter Paul Rubens, Rembrandt, Claude Monet, Fra Angelico and a generous trove of classical antiquities, in addition to noteworthy temporary old master shows and juxtapositions of contemporary art with works in the museums collection that reveal new meanings across decades and genres.
