Shahn, Mooney, and the Apotheosis of American Labor

22 July–25 November 2018

Exhibition Overview

Ben Shahn, Apotheosis, 1932–33.

Ben Shahn (1898-1969) is best known as a leading figure in the creation of political, socially critical art with his Tom Mooney series. This exhibition will feature Shahn’s Tom Mooney series, which is based on the arrest and imprisonment of Northern California labor leader Tom Mooney for a 1916 bombing in San Francisco that resulted from the struggles of the labor movement. The series consists of 16 related pieces, including the final painting Apotheosis, which was originally exhibited at the Downtown Gallery in New York City and is now apart of LACMA’s permanent collection.
