About the Museum

The Musée Guimet is located in Paris and houses one of the most extensive collections of Asian art in the Western world. The museum was originally founded to display the vast collection of art acquired by the industrialist Émile Guimet on his travels throughout Asia. It opened in 1889 following Guimet’s decision to bequeath the collection to the French state. The Musée Guimet contains notable examples of Chinese and Japanese porcelain and Buddhist artwork found during Guimet's Asia expedition, in addition to Greek, Egyptian and Roman works and Southeast Asian artworks collected by French authorities during the colonial period.
