About the Museum

Situated in the renovated Praça Mauá in the port district of Rio de Janeiro, the Museu de Arte do Rio (MAR), was founded in 2013 as part of a City Hall regeneration project in partnership with the Roberto Marinho Foundation. The museum is dedicated to national and international modern and contemporary art. The museum’s main exhibition halls are housed in the historic Dom João VI mansion, an early-20th-century palace, with educational and other activities held in the neighbouring Escola do Olhar, a former bus station. A striking wave-like concrete canopy designed by Brazilian firm Bernardes + Jacobsen Arquitetura that links the two buildings is now a distinctive feature in Rio’s urban landscape.
