About the Museum

The Museu de Arte do Rio's mission is to develop a space where Rio de Janeiro finds and reinvents itself through knowledge about art and the experience of looking. The Museu de Arte do Rio's collection and exhibitions drive a transversal reading of the history of the city, its social fabric, its symbolic life, conflicts, contradictions, challenges, and expectations. Its exhibitions bring together historical and contemporary art dimensions through long- and short-term national and international exhibitions. Inaugurated in March 2013, the museum complex encompasses an area of 15,000 square meters and includes eight exhibition halls and about 2,400 square meters. The two buildings that make up the institution are joined by a square, a walkway, and a fluid roof in the shape of a wave, which turns them into a harmonious whole.
