About the Museum

The Nairobi National Museum interprets, presents and protects Kenya’s rich heritage. It exhibits its collection of history, nature, culture and contemporary art in its location on Museum Hill. It also hosts education programs, conferences and workshops. On the grounds there are also dining and shopping facilities and access to a botanical garden and nature trails.

Initiated in 1910 by naturalists so that they had a place to house their specimens, in 1929 the government constructed the main building on Museum Hill due to its expanding collection. From 2005-08 the museum was closed in order to renovate and modernize its galleries. It is managed by the National Museums of Kenya.
