About the Museum

Opening in 1937, the National Museum of Art of Azerbaijan is a treasure of national values and the preservation of universal cultural heritage. Located in a building built in the Baroque style as a project by NA fon der Nonne in 1887-1895, the collection is comprised of more than 18,000 original artifacts from Azerbaijan, Western Europe, Russia and the East (Iran, Afghanistan, Turkey, Japan, China, India, Egypt, Central Asia).

The museum is located in what was previously operated as an Art Department under the Azerbaijan State Museum in 1924, and since 1936 has been operating as an independent museum by the decision of the People's Commissars Council. In 2011, the museum was granted national status and the European Museum Standard (EUMS) status for quality museum service and a professional experience that met the international standards and criteria by the decision of the European Economic Chamber of Trade, Commerce and Industry (EEIG). The National Museum of Art of Azerbaijan is dedicated to the research and preservation of the arts of nations.
