The National Gallery of Denmark is turning paintings the wrong way round and showing the back of artworks in an exhibition produced in connection with this year’s Golden Days Festival with the theme The B-sides of History.
The museum has taken the theme of this year’s Golden Days Festival theme very literally. We have turned selected works around to showcase the stories and secrets that have been hidden away against the museum walls.
Sometimes they show an artwork that has been painted over or the beginning of a new painting, abandoned before it was finished, on the backside of a canvas. Others show coats of arms that tell tales of previous owners, remnants from earlier restorations – or surprising bonus art!
