About the Museum

Conceived as a “living museum” with palpable links to nature, the National Museum of the American Indian in Washington presents one of the world’s largest collections of Native American art, artefacts and archival material, shedding light on the history and spirit of native people. Set amid landscaped gardens, its striking curvilinear building was designed in collaboration with tribes and communities from around the continent and is a landmark on Washington’s Mall. The museum’s astonishing collection spans 1,200 indigenous cultures from the Incas to the Algonquian, and features over 820,000 objects including Paleo-Indian weapons, Nazca pottery and contemporary painting.
