Peter Hujar: Speed of Life

26 January–20 May 2018

Exhibition Overview

Boy on Raft

This exhibition will offer a new and newly comprehensive look at American artist Peter Hujar, a New York-based photographer best known for his psychologically intense portraits. Since his death, an elite art world audience has come to recognize the singularity of his portraits, nudes, and downtown nightscapes, which have won recognition as enduring visions of New York in the 1970s and 1980s. This exhibition aims to open to viewers a rich, nuanced oeuvre that transcends this niche reputation, and to a new understanding of Hujar as an artist with as distinct a worldview as any postwar master. A catalogue published by Fundación MAPFRE will accompany the show. (Morgan Stanley West Gallery)
