Established in 1900, the National Gallery in Athens holds a collection of over 20,000 works from the post-Byzantine period to today and is considered one of the most important art museums in Greece. The collection has a significant holding of Greek art, but also includes an impressive collection of Western European works by artists including Brueghel, Caravaggio, Delacroix, El Greco, and Picasso. The National Gallery is also known as the Alexandros Soutzos Museum, after the gallery’s most prominent benefactor. The museum aims to collect, preserve, study, and exhibit works of art to better understand the Greek people through the history of art. The museum is also home to a research library and conservation studio.
