This institution is renowned for the quality and breadth of its collections, which include more than 45,000 objects spanning 6,000 years of achievement in the arts. Particularly notable are its comprehensive Asian art collection and holdings of ancient, medieval European and pre-Columbian art. There are masterpieces here by Amerighi da Caravaggio, El Greco, Nicolas Poussin, Peter Paul Rubens, Frans Hals, Jacques-Louis David, Francisco Goya, J.M.W. Turner, Salvador Dalí, Henri Matisse, Pierre-Auguste Renoir, Paul Gauguin, Frederic Church, Thomas Cole, Jean-Baptiste-Camille Corot, Thomas Eakins, Claude Monet, Vincent van Gogh, Pablo Picasso and George Bellows, in addition to important works by later 20th-century artists including Yves Tanguy, Alice Neel, Jackson Pollock, Louise Bourgeois, Andy Warhol, Claes Oldenburg, Agnes Martin, Joseph Kosuth, Nancy Spero, Sol LeWitt, Martin Puryear and Robert Gober, among others. Other strengths include decorative arts, with seminal works by such masters as Fabergé and Tiffany, as well as impressive holdings of 18th-century French art. Prints and drawings, which represent half of the museum’s collection, include works by Albrecht Dürer, Michelangelo, Raphael, Rembrandt and Picasso.
