Reborn in 2005 with a new, state-of-the-art contemporary facility designed by Swiss architects Herzog & de Meuron, the de Young magically weaves together the experience of art, architecture and the incredible natural landscape of Golden Gate Park. Originally launched on this site for the International Exposition of 1894 with an eclectic mix of exotic curiosities, it grew to become among the nation’s greatest venues for American art both past and present, international textile arts and costumes, as well as art of the Americas, Oceania and Africa. The frequent contemporary art installations create a dialogue between living artists and the unique buildings and locations of the de Young and Legion of Honor, and works in the museum’s encyclopaedic collection.
