Founded by developer Brian Sweeney and his wife Eva, an architect, ESMoA is an art laboratory founded in 2013 with the aim of providing ‘a fertile platform for exploring the transformational qualities of art.’ Rather than positioning itself as a museum with a traditional exhibition program, ESMoA puts on a series of ‘experiences’ that promote creative thinking and learning through art. Centered around broad themes such as Desire, Touch and Studio, these shows combine international loans with special commissions and selections from the Sweeneys’ private collection, which includes work by Monet, Klee, Rauschenberg and Warhol. The laboratory hosts regular artist residencies, and offers an online art education course delivered by its own ESMoA Academy. Boasting a flexible, two-story-high main gallery space illuminated by 16 adjustable skylights, the institution challenges preconceived notions of consuming art in its design as well as its programming.
