Taking in artists from Giovanni Battista Tiepolo to Chuck Close, the High Museum of Art boasts one of the most prominent collections of art in the south of the US. Based in a Pritzker Prize-winning building designed by Richard Meier in 1983, with an extension by Renzo Piano completed in 2005, the collection includes European works, spanning the medieval and Renaissance eras to the French modernists; American fine and decorative art from the 19th and 20th centuries and important photography holdings (The High was among the first US museums to begin to acquire photography in the 1970s). It continues to expand on its collections of international modern and contemporary works, African American art, folk art and African art. The High is exceptional among US museums in its dedication to self-taught artists and also supports artists from the southern states. The museum runs a vigorous and wide-ranging exhibition programme.
