As part of the University of Pennsylvania, the ICA has been dedicated to showcasing lesser-known and emerging talent since its founding in 1963 by Holmes Perkins, the dean of the School of Architecture. A non-collecting museum, the ICA’s activity centres around artist-focused exhibitions, hosting approximately twelve a year. The institute has been instrumental in the careers of such artists as Agnes Martin, Robert Mapplethorpe and Cy Twombly, having displayed early shows of their work, as well as Andy Warhol’s first ever solo museum exhibition. To this day the institute is still one of the most forward thinking art spaces in Philadelphia and beyond.
