One of the monumental buildings located on Vienna’s famous Ringstrasse, the Kunsthistorisches Museum Wien was created to house treasures collected by the royal Habsburg family. Formally opened to the public in 1891, the museum is especially well known for its picture gallery, regarded as one of the largest and most significant of its kind. Highlights from this gallery include paintings by Pieter Bruegel the Elder, Vermeer, Rembrandt, Raphael, Caravaggio, and Velázquez. The Kunsthistorisches Museum Wien also has a vibrant ongoing exhibition programme, drawing from the museum’s extensive permanent collection that includes Egyptian, Near Eastern, Greek and Roman antiquities, historic coins and medals, paintings, and unusual and exotic objects from the Kunstkammer Vienna collection.
