The Kunstsammlung Nordrhein-Westfalen boasts an outstanding collection of modern and contemporary art and occupies three different venues in Düsseldorf: the K20 at Grabbeplatz, the K21 in the Ständehaus and the Schmela Haus. The separate buildings house one of the world’s most important European collections of art reaching from the classical period to the present. Eighty-eight works by Paul Klee constitute the foundation of the collection, acquired in 1961. Additional highlights now include significant holdings of German expressionism, surrealism, postwar American and contemporary German art, with works by Pablo Picasso, Salvador Dalí, Jackson Pollock, Joseph Beuys and Nam June Paik. The quality of Kunstsammlung NRW collection has led critics to regard it as a "secret National Gallery".
