The Magyar Nemzeti Galéria (Hungarian National Gallery) first opened as an independent institution in 1957. It is located in the Buda Palace in Budapest, and ranks as the largest public collection of fine art in Hungary. The collections span all genres of Hungarian art, and include the works of many 19th and 20th century Hungarian artists who plied their trade in Paris. Visitors can explore the work of major sculptors such as Károly Alexy, Maurice Ascalon and Miklós Borsos, and painters including Károly Markó the Elder and József Borsos.
