The Museu de Arte de São Paulo Chateaubriand opened in 1947 as Brazil’s first modern museum and is home to the most comprehensive impressionist collection in the southern hemisphere. Its collection includes European masters such as Rembrandt, van Gogh, Goya, El Greco and Monet. MASP also engages with Brazilian culture and history and has staged exhibitions for major Brazilian artists such as Agostinho Batista de Freitas and Portinari. The museum building is a 20th century landmark designed by architect Lina Bo Bardi, characterised by striking bright red beams that support the building over 74 metres of freestanding space.
