Opened in 2004, the Mönchsberg site of the Museum der Moderne sits on the mountain from which it takes its name, overlooking the old city of Salzburg. The building was designed by Friedrich Hoff Zwink architects and connects seamlessly with a neighbouring 19th-century water tower. Along with its sister site at the Rupertinum, it presents Modern and contemporary art from the Museum der Moderne’s collection. Temporary exhibitions showcase work by international artists dating from the 19th century to the present day, and have focused on figures such as Carolee Schneemann, Alex Katz and Ana Mendieta. The museum also maintains a commitment to promoting Austrian art.
