Some of the world's greatest paintings reside in the National Gallery of Ireland, from masterpieces by Rubens to Rembrandt's Portrait of a Woman with Gloves. After a multimillion-pound renovation of its historic galleries, the museum reopened in summer 2017 with a vast number of magnificent works restored and 150 new acquisitions added to the collection. Opened in 1864 after an unexpectedly successful exhibition on the lawns of Leinster House in Dublin demonstrated the Irish public's appetite for art, the National Gallery of Ireland today encompasses a National Portrait Gallery and a fine collection of Irish work alongside its impressive holdings of European painting.
