About the Museum
One of America’s great historic architectural treasures, the Park Avenue Armory re-launched five years ago with a renewed mission: to present adventurous, non-traditional, immersive works by leading contemporary visual and performance artists on an epic scale. The often cutting-edge sensibility of the artworks sharply contrasts with the traditional setting of palatial period rooms by leading Gilded Age designers Louis Comfort Tiffany and Stanford White, and a soaring 5,000-square-metre drill hall. In its young life, the Armory has already featured such notable artists as Peter Greenaway, Christian Boltanski, Ernesto Neto, Tom Sachs, Janet Cardiff and George Bures-Miller, Ann Hamilton, Merce Cunningham, Philip Glass, Patti Smith and the Royal Shakespeare Company. In December 2011, The New York Times noted that the Armory: “has arrived as the most important new cultural institution in New York City."
