A towering figure in 20th-century modernism, whose patronage Leo Castelli described as ‘of epoch-making importance’, the heiress Peggy Guggenheim amassed a remarkable collection of avant-garde art and housed it in her low-rise 1750s palazzo in the Dorsoduro district of Venice. Taking in masterworks of European abstraction, cubism, futurism, abstract expressionism and surrealism, with works by Picasso, Chagall, Miró, Kandinsky, Duchamp, Dalí, Pollock, Braque, De Chirico and Ernst among many others, Peggy Guggenheim’s collection and her home were both gifted to the foundation of her uncle Solomon R. Guggenheim in the 1970s. With the addition of later acquisitions including holdings of early-20th-century Italian art, postwar art and sculpture and an important temporary exhibitions roster, the museum is among the preeminent in the world and Venice’s most popular.
