The Solomon R Guggenheim Museum, founded in 1939, is renowned worldwide as a vital cultural centre dedicated to modern and contemporary art, housed in an iconic building on New York’s Fifth Avenue designed by Frank Lloyd Wright. The inverted-ziggurat design with its distinctive spiral houses Solomon R Guggenheim’s founding collection of abstract paintings, additional abstract and surrealist masterworks gathered by his niece Peggy Guggenheim and a wealth of impressionist, post-impressionist and early modern masterpieces amassed by the renowned German dealer Justin K Thannhauser. Another of the world’s most prominent modern art collectors, Count Giuseppe Panza di Biumo, provided his holdings of European and American minimalist, post-minimalist, environmental and conceptual works. A global outlook fuels the museum’s ambitious acquisitions initiatives and temporary exhibition programme, and its remit runs from modern masters to innovations in contemporary art across multimedia, digital and ephemeral practice.
